Benefits & Salary Information

Besides working for one of the best school systems in the State, there are many other benefits available to our employees!

Benefits

Employees of Henderson County Public Schools are North Carolina state employees, and eligible for many benefits. Check out these N.C. Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) resources for an overview or detailed look at benefits.

NC State Health Plan

Employees who work at least 30 hours per week in a permanent position are offered health insurance through the NC State Health Plan. Use this website to view health plan options, in-network providers, pharmacy benefits, useful forms and other important information.

Employees will annually receive information from Human Resources about completing benefit enrollment online, and can view the Employee Instructions for Completing Your Benefit Enrollment Online.

Cafeteria Benefits

The “Cafeteria Benefits” plan organized under Section 125 of the Internal Revenue Service offers group rates for dental, vision, cancer, disability and life insurance to all full-time permanent employees. Also available are Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) for out-of-pocket medical expenses, as well as dependent care costs. With most of these options, the premiums are pre-taxed.

The open enrollment period for Cafeteria Benefits is scheduled twice a year (once for new employees at the beginning of the school year, and then in the Spring for current employees.)

State Retirement System

Employees who work at least 30 hours per week in a permanent position are members of the Teachers and State Employees Retirement System of North Carolina (TSERS).  The TSERS Retirement Handbook on the NC Retirement Systems website contains information on retirement options, as well as short-term and long-term disability benefits.

401(K)

As an employee of the State of North Carolina, employees may contribute to a supplemental retirement plan, administered by Prudential Insurance Company. Visit the Prudential website for detailed information on how to enroll.

Salary & Supplements

Salary Schedules

Certified/licensed employees are paid according to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction salary schedules, linked on the NCDPI website here.

Non-Certified employees are paid on our local salary schedule, depending upon the position.  When applying for employment, feel free to ask for this information.

Local Supplements

Henderson County Public Schools employees additionally receive an annual local supplement, which are distributed twice a year (one-half in November paychecks and one-half in June paychecks).

Licensed employees currently receive an 9% local supplement, and Non-Certified employees receive a 6.75% local supplement.
