Program Overview
Henderson County Public Schools (HCPS) strives to provide quality instruction to all students in the district. The purpose of the English as a Second Language Program (ESL) is to provide English language instruction and support for non-native English speaking students with Limited English Proficiency (LEP). The number of these English Learners (EL) has grown tremendously in recent years. To ensure that we are able to effectively serve these students, HCPS has aggressively recruited and hired highly qualified, licensed English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers. Additionally, the district has supported a number of initiatives to help meet the unique socioeconomic and cultural needs of this population.
Mission Statement
The English as a Second Language Program seeks to make HCPS a welcoming environment for English language learners and their families. The program strives to provide challenging, quality instruction for all students that promotes academic achievement while supporting English language development. The program encourages maintenance of students’ native languages and cultures as they strengthen and enrich our learning communities.
