What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the ability of computers and software to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. These tasks can include understanding language, recognizing patterns, solving problems, and even making decisions. AI is already present in everyday tools many of us use—like search engines, digital assistants, and recommendation systems on streaming platforms.

Why AI in Education?

AI is rapidly transforming the world around us, and it has the potential to greatly enhance the way we teach, learn, and support one another. In North Carolina and our district, we view AI as a tool to:

  • Empower Teachers: By saving time on routine tasks, educators can focus more on personalized instruction and student engagement.
  • Support Students: AI can offer tailored learning experiences, helping students practice skills at their own pace or explore interests more deeply.
  • Inform Parents: With smarter tools, parents can gain clearer insights into student progress and communicate more effectively with educators.

North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Guidance for NC School Systems

“The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) has released a guidebook for the use of generative artificial intelligence in public schools. NCDPI is the fourth state education department in the nation to issue guidance to its schools on the use of this cutting-edge technology. The state guidebook says that AI literacy should be infused into all grade levels and curriculum areas. It also stresses the importance of incorporating AI into the classroom responsibly — using it as a tool to aid in learning.”1

Our Commitment

The purpose of this site is to raise awareness and understanding of AI in education. We are committed to using AI responsibly and transparently. We are focused on tools that enhance—not replace—human interaction in the classroom. HCPS staff and students will be given instruction on the use of AI and choosing tools which align with our district’s values, protect student privacy, adhere to age restrictions, meet permission requirements, and support meaningful learning.
