Holly Miller, a Social Studies teacher at North Henderson High School, has been selected as the Henderson County Public Schools’ (HCPS) Beginning Teacher of the Year for 2024-2025. In just her first year of teaching, Ms. Miller has exhibited remarkable dedication, enthusiasm, and professionalism, making a lasting impact on her students and the school community.

Ms. Miller’s nomination was submitted by North Henderson High Principal, Dr. John Shepard, who praised her outstanding ability to connect with students and foster a supportive, engaging classroom environment where students thrive. “Her proactive approach to parent communication ensures that families are actively involved in their child’s education, further enhancing student success,” said Dr. Shepard. Beyond the classroom, Ms. Miller is an active participant in school activities, contributing to the school’s mission and vision while embracing feedback for her professional growth.

The North Carolina Prudential Beginning Teacher of the Year award was developed in 2019 by the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) to honor beginning teachers and retain educators who show promise as excellent education leaders in North Carolina public schools. Principals from Henderson County’s 23 schools nominate beginning teachers, and the district’s Curriculum and Instruction staff, along with input from other stakeholders familiar with the nominees’ work, select the overall district winner.

“I love that, as a teacher, I get to develop connections with students and help them become better prepared for their futures! I couldn’t imagine being at a better school at the start of my career. North is an extremely supportive, collaborative environment and really prioritizes helping both students and staff members grow,” shared Ms. Miller.

Ms. Miller’s innovative and captivating lesson plans, combined with her positive attitude and drive for continuous improvement, are key elements of her success. Her educational background is equally impressive—Ms. Miller graduated from Western Carolina University, where she earned the prestigious Cecil Cosper Award of Excellence in Teaching and served as President of the Brinson Honors College Board of Directors.

“Ms. Miller has been a wonderful addition to HCPS and has made a significant impact right out of the gate in her teaching career. Her knowledge of curriculum and command of the classroom are well beyond her years of experience, and it is evident that her students have admiration and respect for her as a teacher. We are fortunate to have her at North Henderson High School,” said HCPS Superintendent Mark R. Garrett.

As the district’s Beginning Teacher of the Year, Ms. Miller is now eligible for the NCCAT state award. The NCCAT Beginning Teacher of the Year receives a $5,000 cash prize, participation in a GoGlobal NC trip, and instructional supply funds for their school. The runner-up receives a $2,000 cash prize, and all finalists receive travel expenses to participate in professional and leadership development through NCCAT.

Regional finalists will be selected later this year and will attend a celebration and week of Teacher Leadership at NCCAT’s Cullowhee campus from March 24-28, 2025. During this time, the NCCAT BTOY Selection Committee will review portfolios and interview the 27 finalists. The statewide winner will be announced at a celebration event on March 27, 2025.
