Henderson County Public Schools (HCPS) is proud to announce that Erin Celej, an Occupational Therapist serving students across the district, has been named the 2025 HCPS Exceptional Children’s Educator of Excellence. This November, Ms. Celej will represent HCPS at the statewide annual Exceptional Children’s Conference in Greensboro.

“Ms. Celej has an incredible ability to connect with students and guide them toward growth,” said Dr. Jennifer Shelton, HCPS Director of Exceptional Children. “She not only helps students build essential skills, but also empowers teachers and families with tools and strategies that have a lasting impact.”

Based at Etowah Elementary, Ms. Celej serves multiple schools in the district, providing therapy that strengthens students’ fine motor, sensory processing, visual motor, and executive functioning skills. Her therapy rooms are places of growth and encouragement, where students are fully engaged and making measurable progress.

Known for her collaborative spirit, Ms. Celej plays a vital role on IEP teams and consistently supports her colleagues. She shares innovative resources across schools, such as a Google Classroom devoted to fine motor skills and handwriting strategies—and provides guidance to teachers on a wide range of topics including sensory processing, classroom management, and peer interactions.

“Ms. Celej is an amazing educator whose passion radiates through everything she does,” said Dr. Amanda Childers, Principal of Etowah Elementary School. “She is a valued member of our school community who inspires her students, uplifts her colleagues, and creates environments where all children can thrive.”

Ms. Celej’s dedication extends beyond direct student support. When one school needed sensory paths, she designed, installed, and trained staff to implement them. Currently, she is leading the development of a new sensory room at Etowah Elementary to benefit students across grade levels.

Her commitment also reaches families and the broader community. Known for clear and thoughtful communication with parents, Ms. Celej ensures families feel supported and informed about their child’s progress. She also promotes the occupational therapy profession, recently presenting to Rugby Middle School students during career day.

Superintendent Mark R. Garrett praised her dedication, noting, “Ms. Celej exemplifies the heart of an educator. She creates opportunities for growth, inspires students to believe in themselves, and works tirelessly to support colleagues and families alike. We are proud to have her represent Henderson County Public Schools as the 2025 Exceptional Children’s Educator of Excellence.”
