Superintendent Retiring at End of School Year

Superintendent David Jones

Henderson County Public Schools’ Superintendent David L. Jones has announced his intention to retire at the end of the 2015-2016 school year, effective July 1, 2016, after nearly four decades of service.

“During my 38 years with Henderson County Public Schools, I have had the opportunity to work as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal, central office administrator and superintendent,” Jones said. “I am very grateful to the people who believed in me and gave me a variety of opportunities to teach, work and lead in our school district.”

Jones had the unique experience of working in the very school system he had attended, having been a student at Edneyville. After earning his Bachelor of Arts in Intermediate Education and K-12 Art from Mars Hill College, Jones was hired by Henderson County Schools as a teacher and coach, first at the bygone East Flat Rock Elementary school and then Edneyville High school – where he coached the 1984 boys basketball team to a State Championship.

Jones served two years as assistant principal of Rugby Junior High (Rugby Middle) beginning in 1988, and prior to the county school system’s merger with Hendersonville City Schools in 1993, became principal at Flat Rock Junior High (Flat Rock Middle) in 1990. Jones served seven years as principal at Flat Rock, before becoming an administrator at Central Office.

Before being appointed superintendent in 2010, Jones filled the administrative roles of associate superintendent, assistant superintendent for personnel services, senior director of accountability and facility management, and director of testing and accountability.

“In each role, I’ve enjoyed working with students and staff for the advancement of public education in our communities,” Jones said.

Jones was named the 2012 North Carolina Superintendent of the Year for the N.C. School Community Health Alliance and in 2014 was named the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Superintendent of the Year.

“I leave with wonderful memories and have been blessed to work with so many outstanding educators and board members, and am thankful for all the parents and community leaders for their partnership and support over the years,” he said.
