3 Communities, One Purpose: Hurricane Helene Fundraiser

An image of text that says "3 communities, one purpose, Hurricane Helene Fundraiser." There is a QR code and mountain scene on the graphic.

For the first time, the Mr. McDowell High School, Mr. Watauga High School, and Mr. West Henderson High School pageants are coming together to raise funds for families within our school communities who have been devastated by the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. 100% of your donations will go directly to meeting the specific needs of these affected families. In a departure from our usual tradition of supporting three families per community, this year the Mr. MHS, Mr. WHS, and Mr. WHHS pageants have united to make a broader impact across three counties severely impacted by the hurricane. All funds received on the link below will be split evenly between the three counties. Be on the lookout for specific flyers from each school with more information on event locations and themes.

Donations can be made by clicking on this link: OnePurpose OR by scanning the QR code above. Checks can be made out to HCEF, PO Box 1267, Hendersonville NC 28793 – please put MHS, WHS, or WHHS in the memo.

Mr. MHS, Mr. WHS, & Mr. WHHS will all take place on Saturday, December 7, 2024 @ 7:00 pm at their respective schools.

Background Information for Mr. MHS, Mr. WHS, and Mr. WHHS Pageants:

  • Twenty-six years ago, a beloved teacher at Watauga High School in Boone, NC, was diagnosed
with liver cancer. In response, the students sought a way to support his family by raising a
significant amount of money. This heartfelt effort led to the creation of the first Mr. WHS pageant.
  • The success of this initiative in Watauga County inspired similar events in neighboring
communities, eventually leading to the establishment of the Mr. MHS (McDowell County) and Mr.
WHHS (Henderson County) pageants in McDowell and Henderson Counties.
  • Each year, McDowell, Watauga, and West Henderson High Schools host this unique pageant and comedy show to raise funds for local community members facing severe hardships, particularly those dealing with medical expenses or significant losses.
  • Student contestants are required to raise a minimum of $200 to participate, though many exceed this goal. Families in need are nominated by school employees and then selected by the students who organize and run the event.
  • What sets this pageant apart is its deep commitment to the community. Not only is it entirely
student-led, but 100% of the funds raised go directly to the families selected. Typically, three
families from each community are chosen to benefit from the funds raised.
  • This year, McDowell, Watauga, and West Henderson High Schools are uniting their efforts to raise
money for families in all three communities that have been severely impacted by the devastation
    of Hurricane Helene.
