HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. Dec. 14, 2023 – On the surface, it might not seem like a big deal, but to Henderson County Public Schools, a commemorative “Class of” T-shirt can be a cherished memory of a student’s school journey.A senior holding a class of 2024 shirt while standing next to a kindergartener wearing a class of 2036 shirt.

For decades, HCPS, along with dedicated partner sponsors, has celebrated the academic journey of incoming kindergarteners by gifting them a “Class of” T-shirt, fostering excitement and focus on their educational future.

Turns out, HCPS unintentionally missed providing the annual Kindergarten T-shirt to some class groups, including this year’s upcoming 2024 graduates. Students in the classes of 2025-2027 also were inadvertently missed.

This past Friday, thanks to a partnership with local businesses, HCPS presented a special Senior Class T-shirt as a gift for seniors across the district. What made this occasion truly special was the involvement of kindergarteners who, in a heartwarming twist, personally presented the T-shirts to seniors. This gesture added a unique connection between students starting and finishing their academic journeys.

“We’ve heard from students, teachers, and parents many times that this annual tradition of giving our students their ‘class of,’ t-shirts in the first days of their school journey really matters. I have seen students and adults wearing the shirts they received as kindergarten students. When we realized some classes were missed, we wanted to circle back around and make this up to our seniors,” said Mark R. Garrett, Superintendent. “We want them to know how much we love and support them as they continue their journey toward graduation. They will always be part of the HCPS family.”

The following sponsors made the Class of 2024 Shirts possible: Blue Ridge Community College, Champion Comfort Experts, Henderson County Sheriff’s Office STAR program, Hendersonville Family Dental, Mills River Family Dental, Henderson County Education Foundation, Ebenezer Baptist Church, and 1st Choice Graphics.
