New York Times Best-Selling Author Visits East Henderson High School

Megan Shepherd author with EHHS junior, Valerie who planned the visit

It’s not everyday students have the chance to chat and listen to a New York Times Best-Selling author.

On Friday, East Henderson High School hosted Megan Shepherd, who shared her experiences as an author, answered questions for students, and signed books. Shepherd is the author of many acclaimed middle grade and young adult novels including Malice House, The Madman’s Daughter series, The Cage series, The Secret Horses of Briar Hill, Dog Star, and the Grim Lovelies series. She lives and writes on a 125-year-old farm outside Asheville. Shepherd also shared a fun secret project that she has been working on with the group. Disney hired her to work on the novelization of The Nightmare Before Christmas movie.

What makes the event extra special is that it was planned from start to finish by Valerie, a Junior at East Henderson.

“It was my ‘leave a legacy’ project for the student government (SGA) honors class. I knew this year that I wanted to do a project that really meant a lot to me, said Valerie. “I absolutely hated reading before I came to East. The school librarians helped me figure out what books I wanted to read and ever since then I have been reading like crazy.”

Valerie’s hard work did not go unnoticed by Katie Rogers, Media Specialist at East Henderson High School, “Valerie was incredibly determined from the moment she decided on an author visit for her ‘Leave a Legacy’ Project.  She has felt, first hand, the impact of interacting with authors and reading in her own experience, and she wants that impact to reach as many students as possible.”
