Clear Creek Elementary students in Ms. Miller’s art classes are exploring Black History Month through hands-on projects.
On Tuesday, first-grade classes learned about Mae Jemison, who became the first African American woman to travel into space when she served as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1992. Students learned about Jemison’s accomplishments and watched a video about her experiences.
Ms. Miller told her class, “Mae was a doctor, engineer, astronaut, and you can be anything too.”
After learning about Jemison, students went to work on a space project made out of colorful paper. The project allowed students to use their imagination and include Jemison or themselves flying to space.
Ms. Miller shared a famous quote with the class from Jemison, “Never be limited by other people’s imagination; never limit others because of your own limited imagination.”
As part of Black History Month, Clear Creek students are also learning about female artists Faith Ringold and Alma Thomas.
