HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (March 11, 2016) – Hillandale Elementary has been awarded a grant of $2,500 from the Biogen Foundation’s “Ignite the Power of STEM” grant program, and will be used to help fund the school’s summer BMX bike STEM camp.
Hillandale held its first STEM camp in August 2015, in which 30 rising 4th- and 5th-graders used science, technology, engineering, and math skills to build working BMX bikes. Lead Teacher Kyle Barker said the camp turned out to be extremely popular among students and families last year, after the school had only expected about 15 students to sign up.
This August, the school will once again invite 30 students to apply for the one-week program, and Barker said the grant funds will be used to purchase 10 BMX bicycle kits, tools and bike helmets.
