HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (March 9, 2018) – Kindergarten registration for children turning 5 on or before Aug. 31 is coming up in April, and Henderson County Public Schools is hosting the annual Kindergarten Readiness Rally on April 10, to get parents and students on track for the start of the new school year.

Co-sponsored by Western Carolina Community Action, Smart Start of Henderson County, the Children & Family Resource Center and HCPS, the Kindergarten Readiness Rally will give parents the opportunity to confirm their designated school district, learn which documents to bring to registration, and meet their children’s teachers and administrators.

While the parents learn about registration, children can participate in fun learning activities conducted by kindergarten teachers from our elementary schools, which parents can replicate at home to support school readiness. In addition, more than 20 local nonprofit organizations that work with children and families will host activities and/or provide free give-aways, including Blue Ridge Health, El Centro, the Hands On! children’s museum, the Henderson County Public Library, and Safelight.

An HCPS school bus will also be on site to introduce the children to school bus safety and to ease any anxieties they – or their parents – might have about riding the bus to school come August. And every kindergartner who attends can take a book home, choosing from old favorites like, “Brown Bear, Brown Bear,” “Harold and the Purple Crayon,” and “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and newer books, like “Dragons Love Tacos,” “Pete the Cat” books, and titles in “The Bear Books” series by Karma Wilson.

Parents with a student already enrolled in school can still benefit from attending the Rally by meeting their kindergartener’s future teachers and administrators, and by asking any questions about the kindergarten program at HCPS. The Rally will take place from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, at the Blue Ridge Mall in Hendersonville.
