HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (Oct. 10, 2017) – To recognize the National School Lunch Program and the 30 million children it serves every day, Henderson County Public schools is celebrating National School Lunch Week from October 9-13, 2017, emphasizing the healthy foods that are offered daily to local students.

“School lunches are healthier than ever, with more fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and less fat and sodium,” said Robert Rolfe, Child Nutrition Director. “National School Lunch Week helps us educate parents and students about all the benefits of our lunch program, and the appealing choices we offer.”

Throughout the year, HCPS features NC Farm to School fresh fruits and vegetables coordinated through the North Carolina Department of Agriculture as well as produce provided by Department of Defense funding. In season, up to 20 percent of produce used in schools comes from locally sourced farms. More than 75 percent of grain offerings are whole grain-rich and the Child Nutrition Department strives to provide a variety of scratch-made entrees.

The federally-funded National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides nutritionally balanced, healthy meals to students every day. The program, which has been serving the nation’s children for over 60 years, requires school meals to meet federal nutrition standards like offering fruits and vegetables every day, serving whole grain-rich foods, and limiting fat, calories, and sodium.
