HCPS Summer Meal Program

Meals on the Bus graphic with road and HCPS logo

Through the annual USDA-funded Summer Food Service Program, HCPS will again provide lunch meals at no cost to families for children ages 2 to 18.

This summer, the “Meals on the Bus” program will operate on weekdays from Monday, June 9 through Friday, July 25 at four sites: East Flat Rock Park, Jackson Park Shelter 4, Dana Community Park, and Edneyville Community Center.

The park locations are back this year, providing children with a comfortable place to enjoy meals on-site. Each stop includes picnic tables and ample outdoor space, creating a welcoming experience for our community while meeting federal guidelines. Please note that meals must be eaten on-site—there is no grab-and-go option, and we are unable to distribute multiple meals to one individual. Per USDA Summer Food Service regulations, each child must be present to receive a meal.

Visit HCPSNC.org for bus stop times and locations. Please share this news with others so that we can get even more kids eating this summer.

Families with questions may contact the HCPS Child Nutrition Department at 828-891-6310.

Freshman Academy Students of the Month – May

Brandon holding certificate with SOTM frame

Freshman academy would like to recognize our students of the month for May – Brandon Haskins and Ann Mary Menzinor.

Brandon is a hard worker that shows great discipline.  Oftentimes when his friends around him are off task, he continues to stay on task.  He shows great promise with his determination.  In addition to his hard work ethic and good grades, he sets a great example of a role model, always polite and pleasant to be around.  Teachers enjoyed having him in their classrooms because of his smile and constant positive attitude. Even when things are difficult, Brandon always tries his best and perseveres.

Ann Mary always provides top-tier effort, turns in work on time, and works hard to make sure that she understands the assignment and does it right. Reliable, friendly, positive–she is an example to her friends and peers. (Ann Mary did not wish to be pictured.)

Eagle of the Week

Class of 2025 on field in EOTW frame
This week’s Eagle of the Week has made us proud the last four years, and we are thrilled to celebrate the Class of 2025 as they get ready to step into their next chapter after Friday night’s graduation.  We know they are ready to take on whatever comes their way, and we will continue to celebrate their accomplishments in the worlds of Employment, Enlistment and Enrollment for many years to come.  Remember: Once an Eagle, Always an Eagle!  We love you, Class of 2025!  Vamos Aguilas and Go Eagles!

Last week, Mrs. Masters, one of our awesome Eagle parents, a regular substitute for us, and a fantastic partner to our school taught our Exceptional Eagles about shibori dyeing.  Students learned how the indigo plant is used to make a fabric dye and its magical ability of changing color, from green to blue, through oxidation. They used Japanese shibori folding techniques to make the patterns in their artwork. Each student now has hand dyed tea towels to take home and use in their kitchens.

On Tuesday, our own Walker celebrated the completion of his program with Mr. Reed and all of his Exceptional Eagle friends at an in-house graduation party.  Walker was celebrated by friends and family, shared lots of memories of the last 8 years, and received his scrapbook from Mr. Reed and SGA as a memory of his time at East.  We are so thankful that Walker is an Eagle, and we are proud of him for the legacy he has left at East.

On Friday morning, we kicked off the last day of school with our Senior Awards honoring the Class of 2025.  The ceremony was a celebration of academics, the arts, athletics, character, and what’s next for all of our Eagle graduates.  We are so proud of the Class of 2025!

On Friday evening, after a slight rain delay, we were able to host our graduation ceremony on E.L. Justus Field complete with our Valedictorian and Salutatorian speeches, a message from Mr. Scott, a poetry reading from our Poet Laureate, and the conferring of our graduates.  Though it was breezy and a bit chilly, we were thrilled to celebrate our Class of 2025 outside.

We hosted our traditional Project Graduation event this year at the Hendersonville Family YMCA from 11pm-2am.  This event is for graduates, and the night is filled with swimming, games, raffles, food, fellowship, and dancing.  We are thankful to our Project Graduation donors – the ABC Board, Hendersonville Elks Lodge #1616, and Energy Mart – for making this evening possible.  Thank you also to the incredible YMCA staff, who made this event possible and were great hosts for our Eagles.

Go Eagles!
