Attendance Update from HCPS

Superintendent Mark R. Garrett recently led a discussion at the Board Meeting on Monday, October 13 on Policy 4400 concerning attendance and the confusion statewide about attendance requirements.

Please know that Henderson County Public Schools’ attendance policy has not changed. However, due to the ongoing statewide confusion, HCPS will hold students harmless for the first nine weeks when it comes to absences affecting course credit.

Beginning Wednesday, October 15, 2025, the attendance policy went back into full effect. This means that for students to earn credit in a course, students may have no more than 5 absences, whether excused OR unexcused.

Please be aware that students can fail and not receive credit due to excessive absences. Students have the opportunity to make up absences over 5 in the following ways:

  • Morning Attendance Recovery on Mondays and Tuesdays from 6:45-7:45am in Mr. Rotton’s room (B-2);
  • Afternoon Tutoring on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:15-4:15pm in Mrs. Wodzicki’s room (F-10);
  • Saturday School on November 15, December 6 and December 13 from 9am-3pm. The cost for each Saturday School is $20.

The HCPS Board Policy 4400 is linked for your convenience. Thank you for your attention and continued support. Go Eagles!

Attendance Recovery Starts THIS Week

Beginning this week, our attendance recovery options become available. As a reminder, students over 5 absences in any course will not have access to Smart Period privileges (all students), and will not walk in the graduation ceremony (upperclassmen).  One hour of attendance recovery recovers one absence.  Options for making up this seat time include:

Morning Academic Recovery info with pile of books and coffee Morning Attendance Recovery will be offered twice per week this year on Mondays and Tuesdays from 6:45-7:45am in Mr. Rotton’s room (B-2). Please make sure you have things to work on during this time.  Each morning recovery session recovers one absence.

Student Kaylee Melton is once again fundraising and organizing the Carson Mathes Memorial Scholarship to honor the memory of an Eagle alumna and staff member who tragically lost her life just over a year ago. This scholarship will benefit East High Class of 2026 students who apply and are chosen in the spring. If you feel so inclined, please help support this scholarship by donating by scanning the QR code in the image above or by dropping off cash or a check made out to EHHS during any school day. We thank you for your continued support in honoring the memory of Carson Mathes.

2025-2026 Poet Laureate Contest

We need you. Please submit your original work to our annual Poet Laureate Contest, brought to you by Mic Drop Writers Club! This contest is open to all grade levels and emphasizes the importance of both writing original poetry and performing it.  The theme is “The Fall.”  Submit an original poem as a take on your own interpretation of this theme.

What is a Poet Laureate, you ask? The Poet Laureate will serve as the official poet of East Henderson High School for the 2025-26 school year. This poet will be given various opportunities to share original poetry throughout the school year, in writing and on stage, including at the graduation ceremony. In the past, this single performance opportunity has been the role of the Poet Laureate, but we have visions of expansion this year, which is why we are having the contest now instead of in the spring.

More details about submitting your work:

  • Students are only allowed to submit one entry.
  • Please submit your entry using your student ID number–NOT YOUR NAME–to this  email address: ehhspoetlaureatecontest@gmail.com
  • Submission Deadline: Friday, October 31st.  Entries will then be reviewed and a winner chosen shortly thereafter.

In addition to the print and performance opportunities mentioned above, here are some other benefits to consider:

  • Gain poetic prestige!
  • Hone your craft!
  • This looks amazing on your high school transcript and scholarship applications!
  • You will have multiple chances to drop the mic.

Please reach out to Ms. Savoy if you have any questions.

If you would like to have someone recognized and raise money for disabled veterans, please follow the link: https://support.dav.org/participant/EHHS. You may also share this link with friends and family so that we can recognize as many veterans as possible within our community and families. We will be collecting names until November 5th.

Eagles of the Week

David Sherrill sitting on stair Brianna Henn leaning on window
We have two Eagles of The Week this week – Brianna Henn and David Sherill. They are our honorary Eagles of the week, as they both tragically lost their lives recently. David was an 8th grader at Flat Rock Middle School who always put others before himself and made his friends laugh. Brianna was a senior at North Henderson High School where she was greatly involved in clubs like HOSA where she was the president. Brianna and David will both be greatly missed by their community.

Last Week in Eagle Country

Not last week, but still worth celebrating, are photos from Dalton Halford’s Gospel Jubilee benefit concert to raise money for our choral program. Dalton did a fantastic job over the last year making sure these groups’ fees were paid so every dollar raised that night could benefit EHHS chorus. We are so proud of Dalton’s hard work and this wonderful celebration of music!

Last week was National School Lunch Week, and we want to take a moment to shout out the most fantastic team of cafeteria staff out there!  Led by Ms. Melanie, cafeteria manager, the team is made of up some fantastic Eagles – Ms. Jo, Ms. Leisha, Ms. Jennifer, and Ms. Treva. We are so thankful for the incredibly hard work of these ladies every single day as they bring three meals to students – breakfast, second chance breakfast and lunch!  Thanks for keeping our Eagles fed!

On Thursday evening, our beginning and intermediate theater students put on plays to show off what they’ve been learning in class. These students did an outstanding job, and the future is bright for the Eagles Performing Arts Company!

On Thursday, several of our Eagles visited the Girls Empowered (GEM) meeting at Dana Elementary. Each year, GEM hosts a session called “Enlighten”, where they invite high school girls to share their stories of growth,  wisdom and encouragement with participants. Shayla, Nicki, Kinley, Chloe & Jade all volunteered their time to invest in these future Eagles, and we are thankful for the partnership with GEM that allows our Eagles to serve.

Go Eagles!
