Have you heard of the “summer slide?” It’s when students lose some of the learning they achieved in the previous school year over the summer break. One way to help your child start off the school year strongly is to encourage them to read over the summer!
- The Henderson County Public Library has a summer reading program each year, with fun events and activities that promote reading and learning.
- Barnes and Noble has a summer reading program where children can earn free books after completing a summer Reading Journal.
- Scholastic has a summer reading home base where kids can read, play games and activities, and earn digital experiences!
- Imagination Soup lists many free summer reading programs that are available to you, and fun for your child!
- Get access to thousands of e-books from the NC Kids Digital Library (you can access it through Henderson County Public Library with your student number) and read them on your device at home!
Check out these opportunities to help your child stay actively learning over the summer, and start the new school year ready to go!
