Attendance, Attendance, Attendance

Student attendance at school is an integral part of their success at school. Studies show that poor attendance in the early grades (K-3) can have a major influence on whether a child can read proficiently by the end of their 3rd grade year, and by 6th grade, chronic absence becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school.

Here at the beginning of the school year, we want to strongly emphasize and encourage great attendance at school. However, we also understand that your child may get sick, or need to go to an appointment, or maybe even head out-of-town for necessary travel. We ask all parents to please communicate with your child’s teacher if they are going to be absent. Whether through an email or a phone call or even social media, letting us know when and/or why your child will be absent can prevent unexcused absences, and strengthen the ability for teachers and parents to work together to ensure that students do not get behind when they are absent.

September is Attendance Awareness Month, and we will be talking to our students about good attendance at school, including minimizing late arrivals and early departures.

Please take a look at these two very good links from the website www.attendanceworks.org, related to both pre-school/kindergarten and elementary grades (1-5) student attendance. Please take a look.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Now serving… free student school lunches!

Announced last week, HCPS is now serving free lunches to all students! Here is the message last week that went out to students here at school:

Students, we’re excited to share some fantastic news with you! Starting today, we’re thrilled to announce that breakfast and lunch are now available at no cost for all students in our school.

Please note that while the main lunch options are now free, extra items such as ice cream, chips, and similar extras are still available for purchase.

Our goal is to ensure that each one of you has access to a healthy meal during your time at school. We encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity.

Student Chromebook User Agreement

***We are still missing around 30% of our student Chromebook User Agreement forms. If you have not done this yet, please do so as soon as you can. ***

Henderson County Public Schools is expanding its coverage and liabilities for our student Chromebook users in order to be able to have long-term sustainability in providing one-to-one access to a Chromebook each and every day. This school year, parents will need to read and agree to the HCPS Chromebook User Agreement along with having an opportunity to purchase insurance in case your student’s assigned Chromebook gets damaged or lost. Many of you did this last evening at Meet the Teacher, but in case you were unable to do so, the information is below.

Parents have until Friday, August 18, 2023, to read and agree with the User Agreement. You will also have limited time to purchase insurance to cover any damages or loss to your student’s Chromebook, so if you want insurance, you will need to do so in a timely manner. It is essential to know that all Chromebook users, regardless of insurance status, will be held financially liable for any damage to or loss of Chromebooks, whether at school or home.

Paper copies of the agreement will be available for you at the school’s front office. Thank you for your support.

2023-2024 Annual Public Notice

Parents – Please take a look at this year’s annual public notices. This document is also linked on the HCPS website, along with the Student Code of Conduct. I ask that you take a few minutes to review this document as it relates to FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act).

Media Opt-in/Opt-out

It’s time once again to indicate whether you want your child to be included in any media opportunities facilitated by Henderson County Public Schools. If you DO NOT want your child to be interviewed, photographed, or to have videos published on the HCPS website, social media, or district/school publications, including the Yearbook, you must complete the state standardized media opt out form through PowerSchool’s Parent Portal.

Specifically:

Answering “No” to the ParentPortal screening Question 1: “Do you grant permission to allow directory information for non-commercial purposes?” will exclude your child’s directory information (including name and photo) from use in all of the following:

  • School yearbooks
  • Media coverage of school activities/student awards
  • School/district newsletters
  • School/district social media
  • Published honor roll lists
  • Published graduation announcements and lists
  • StudentAccess library service through HCPS

Parents/guardians will be prompted to indicate their preferences in the Parent Portal at the beginning of each school year, and may update those preferences at any time. Parents/guardians without Parent Portal access should contact their school’s data manager to create a Parent Portal account, or complete the paper copy of the NCDPI screening questions.

Morning Car Rider Line Help!

We are always in need of volunteers (both Moms and Dads) to help us with morning car rider line, ensuring that students get out of their car in a safe and timely manner, keeping the line running smoothly.
If you are interested in helping out, send me an email at jehart@hcpsnc.org, or, just show up and help out. We have a lot of fun!
