Now Hiring Bus Drivers!
Our shortage of Bus Drivers continues to be a concern here at Flat Rock. Driving a bus is a great way to make some extra cash! There are monthly bonuses for driving a certain number of routes and for drivers with perfect attendance. We rarely have discipline issues on our buses, and our staff and students work hard to treat our bus drivers like kings and queens! If you already have a CDL license, becoming a driver is fairly simple. If you want to obtain a CDL license, the school district will provide the training and reimburse any costs after you drive for the school. If you or someone you know is interested in driving a school bus, please email or call Dane Lancaster.

Buses
Thank you to all parents of students who ride our buses. We have had many drivers from both Flat Rock and East Henderson who have had medical issues. That, paired with buses already being short staffed, has resulted in buses not being able to run sometimes. Please know that we try to avoid parking a bus in any way that we can, and we send out calls and texts as soon as we know a bus will need to be parked for a route. Overwhelmingly, our parents have been very supportive when this has happened, and we greatly appreciate your understanding and flexibility.

Winter Weather Reminders
Now that we have entered the month of December, parents/guardians need to know the possibility of last-minute changes to the transportation schedule on occasions when inclement weather is predicted or imminent.
- For announcements of school closings and emergency early dismissals, please listen/watch for updates through SwiftK12. These announcements will also be made on local television stations, radio stations, the HCPS website, and the HCPS Facebook page.
- Have a plan in place with your family in the event that an Early Dismissal is called and your children have to be picked up early from school.
- Be prepared for 2- or 3- hour delays to occur.
- If you live on a road that is hazardous during winter weather, have a plan in case the bus cannot run on your road.
Buses Parked
Thank you very much to all of our students’ parents who have been impacted by us having to occasionally not run an afternoon bus route. We currently have nine buses and five of them have no driver, so we are covering the routes as best we can. The state and national requirements for training new bus drivers have made it increasingly difficult to hire new drivers, as well as to keep our current drivers working. We appreciate your patience, flexibility, and understanding as we navigate these challenges with school transportation. We have the greatest school community for helping us out when we need it! Thank you all!

School Community Health
Parents, we have had a sharp increase in student illness at our school. Flu, strep, stomach bug, and other sicknesses are spreading amongst our students. We normally have less than 30 students absent on a normal day. For the last nine school days, we have had over 100 students absent each day, mostly due to being sick. Please do not send your child to school if they are sick. If your child runs a fever, they should not return to school until they have been fever-free for over 24 hours (without fever-reducing medication). Also, please remind your child to wash their hands often and not share food or drink with other students. Hopefully, we’ll start to see everyone feeling better soon!

The State Board of Education released our performance composite from last year this week. Flat Rock Middle had amazing results on our testing this past school year. We had the highest academic growth out of all middle schools in the county! We had the third highest academic growth out of all schools in Henderson County! It was a challenging year, but our school community still thrived. We are so proud of our students and staff! We will focus this year on growing even more by continuing to do what’s best for our students. Thank our students’ parents for supporting us and your child’s academics!

We appreciate your continued support and patience as we navigate a severe bus driver shortage. We run 18 bus routes from Flat Rock and 10 of the 18 routes do not have a driver. We are covering the routes with teachers, administrators, and other staff as best we can. Thank you for your understanding as we work through it.

Following the presentation, students were able to pick up an application to complete. These applications are still available at the front desk here at Flat Rock.

School Calendar Change
The 2021-2022 school calendars have been updated to reflect last week’s schedule changes due to winter weather.
- Friday, February 18, is now a full instructional day for students on all calendars.
- Friday, February 25, is now a Remote Learning Day for all students.
Virtual vs. Remote
Under specific circumstances, the school or district could have to move to virtual or remote, as we have had to in the past couple of weeks. Virtual and remote days are different! The differences are explained here:
- “Virtual” Learning Day: Teaching is live and synchronous from 8:00-12:00 through Google Meet and Google Classroom. Teachers are available in the afternoon for small group and 1:1 support.
- “Remote” Learning Day: This is an asynchronus day. Students use Choice Boards to complete assignments at home. Your child’s teacher should have already provided the Choice Board. Teachers are not available virtually on these days via Google Meet. (February 25th is now a Remote Learning Day)

Bus 196 Accident
As you may have seen in the news and on social media, Bus 196 was involved in a single-vehicle accident on Green River Rd on Tuesday morning, November 2nd. The bus was transporting four Flat Rock students. The students were transported to local hospitals and were evaluated for injuries. Fortunately, all of the students have been released from the hospital and are recovering. Tragically, the bus driver, Mrs. Tina Gordon, passed away in the accident. We continue to keep her family in our thoughts and prayers.
We want to thank everyone for the outpouring of love and support through this traumatic event. We are so blessed to live and work in this community.

Is Your Child Going Home With Another Student?
If a student is going home with another student, both students need a note from their parents/guardians. We have been getting notes for the student who has a transportation change, but we also need a note from the other students’ parent giving permission for this student to come home with their child.
Athletics – TeamReach
There is a TeamReach application available to help with communications regarding all Flat Rock Athletics in general. If your child is involved in sports, please download the TeamReach app from the Apple App store or Google Play store. Add this code to get information regarding all sports at Flat Rock.

Devious Licks
We would like to make parent/guardians aware that there is a trend going around Tik-Tok encouraging students to vandalize the school and/or steal items from school. This trend is being referred to as the “Devious Licks” challenge. This has become a very serious issue at our school and at other middle and high schools. We are having to spent countless hours investigating these issues of vandalism, and our custodians are working tirelessly to clean up and conduct repairs. Please help us by having a conversation with your child about the importance of respecting our school building and others’ belongings. Students that have been identified as contributing to these issues have faced serious consequences including suspensions and these incidents are reported to law enforcement.
Social Media
If you don’t already, please like and follow our school Social Media pages. With school now in full swing, we will begin sharing the many great things happening at Flat Rock!

Media Opt Out
If you would like your child to be “opted out” of being photographed and included as part of our school or district media publications, please see the link below for information on how to do that this year. Please be aware that there are changes this year from previous years, and you have to take action to opt your child out this year.
Thank You
We appreciate our parents/guardians for all you do to contribute to your child’s education. Whether it be reinforcing our expectations at home, helping with homework completion, attending sports events, or getting them to school on time each day, we want to say thank you! We appreciate your support!
