The Book Fair is coming April 28 through May 5! Each student will have a chance to shop the book fair during their ELA class that week. The book fair will be open from 7:45 am – 4:00 each day. EOG Testing Proctors Needed
We are in need of about 30 parent volunteers per day to proctor for this year’s EOG testing. Anyone can proctor! You will get a short 10 minute training at 7:30 that morning before testing. You just have to be present in the testing room during the testing time – you can read a book, have water, etc. It’s a pretty quiet, easy morning. EOG testing will take place the week of May 19th. Please consider signing up to help here. Thank you for your support!

Today’s Lockdown Drills
Today, in coordination with the Henderson County Sheriff’s Department, we conducted a Lockdown Drills Performance Test to enhance safety procedures for our students and staff. All Henderson County Public Schools follow the Standard Response Protocol (SRP), which provides clear, standardized actions for different emergency situations. These drills help ensure everyone is prepared, creating a safer environment for our school community. Thank you for your support as we continue to practice regular safety drills. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Stepp, Ms. Brown, Mr. Lancaster, or our School Resource Officer, Deputy Folan.

New Car Rider Procedures
**Thank You for Your Cooperation with Car Rider Procedures!**
We greatly appreciate your support as we’ve transitioned to the new car rider procedures. These changes are making a big difference! The car line, which previously ended around 3:45, is now wrapping up before 3:30. This improvement has reduced traffic on W Blue Ridge Rd, minimized interference with Hillandale’s line, and allowed our second-load buses to arrive for pick-up more quickly.
A quick reminder: Students may not be picked up early after 2:30 pm. At that time, the car rider line forms into double lanes, making post-2:30 pickups very difficult to manage. Thank you for helping us keep things running smoothly!

PM Car Rider Line Modification
In an effort to get our students home sooner, we are modifying our afternoon car rider line.
- The beginning of the car rider line (from W Blue Ridge Road to the car rider turn-off) will now be a single line of cars in the left lane. This will allow our buses to return to the school without waiting in the car line, thus allowing our 2nd load students to get home sooner.
- Beginning at the car rider turn-off, we will run two car lanes through the front-of-school pick-up area. This will allow us to dismiss more students at a time.
- During extreme cold or inclement weather, when students remain inside the building, please text your student (if they have a cell phone) to let them know you are here to pick them up. Students will show the teacher your text, and they will be released. This will move things quicker as well. For students without a cell phone, just let the staff member in the car line know who you are picking up.

HCPS Calendar Update
Following Hurricane Helene, HCPS updated our school calendars to reflect some important changes. Certain missed days have been forgiven by the state and are now labeled as “Helene Days” on the calendar. The tentative last day for students is Friday, May 30, 2025.
View and save the updated calendars here: https://www.HCPSNC.org/district/calendar/. Flat Rock follows the Traditional School Calendar.
October 11, 2024
Post-Helene Updates
- Return to School:
- Monday, 10/14: Required Teacher Workday, No School for Students
- Tuesday, 10/15: Students Return to School
- Buses:
- To keep our students safe, we have had to adjust some routes to avoid dangerous road conditions. Primarily, this means some routes now include one or more community stops.
- This message will also be shared via a School Messenger Message, Team Reach, and our School Website.
- You can view an easy-to-read schedule for each bus route by visiting the FRMS and EHHS Bus Routes document and clicking on your bus number.
- The best way to stay connected to your child’s bus driver is to ensure you are a part of their TeamReach group. Group codes can also be found in the linked document.
- If your phone/internet service does not allow you to access this link, please come by the school on Monday, October 14th to receive a paper copy of your bus’s route information.
- We ask that you be patient as we adjust to new bus times and changes, and we recommend that you be at your bus stop at least 10 minutes earlier than usual to account for these adjustments.
- Please reach out to Mr. Lancaster if you have further questions.
- Cafeteria Services: Breakfast will be free for all students. Lunch is not free unless you have applied and been approved for free/reduced lunch. Students may reapply for free/reduced lunch if their situation has changed.
- Student Communication: This week, we have had teams of staff reaching out to families via phone. We have also had school staff visit over 150 homes to establish contact. We have communicated with all students and ensured they are safe.
- Students’ Status: To date we are aware that 47 or more of our students have been displaced, evacuated, or have damage to their homes. We have confirmed that despite these situations, the students and their families are safe. Some remain without power/water/internet access.
- Staff Status: We have confirmed that all of our staff are safe. Several of our staff temporarily evacuated post-Helene, and most have returned to Henderson County. We do have three staff members who have been displaced due to damage to their homes, but we have confirmed that they are all safe and returning to work.
- Building Status: We lost a bus during Helene. We had several roof leaks and many power lines down. Our leaks were all quickly repaired, and power has been restored. We also have internet access at school. Our landline phones are not currently operational.
- Supplies and Support: If your family is in need of specific supplies or support, please contact your child’s teacher, a school counselor, or an administrator. The Henderson County Distribution Center at 118 McAbee Court, Flat Rock is open October 11, 12, and 13 from Noon to 5 PM.
- Events: The following school events will be rescheduled (dates to be determined):
- Fall Sports Pep Rally and Spirit Week
- Quarter 1 Eagle Pride Day
- Quarter 1 Honor Roll Celebrations
- School Calendar/Make Up Days: The NC Department of Public Instruction and NC General Assembly will inform our District Leadership of what is expected. Upon receiving that information, our District Leaders will make decisions and share that with us.
Athletics
- All sports practices have resumed.
- Thursday, October 17
- Football at AVMS @ 4:30
- All other sports will resume games/meets the week of October 21st.

School Lunch Payments
As a reminder, automatic free lunch will end on Tuesday, September 24, 2024. To ensure there is no interruption in meal benefits, we encourage families to complete the application for free or reduced-price meals as soon as possible. The application can be completed online or paper applications are available at your child’s school.
Please remember that Universal Breakfast continues for the 2024-2025 school year for all students across the district. This ensures that every single HCPS student has the chance to start their day with a nutritious breakfast, free of charge and without any questions or forms.
If you do not complete the application, or if your child does not qualify for free or reduced-price meals, you will need to ensure your child has money on their lunch account to pay for lunch. Add funds to your child’s lunch account here: K12PaymentCenter.com.
Bus Drivers Needed
Parents and community members, we need your help to ensure that all our students get home promptly and safely. Currently, our bus routes are doubled up, which means some students aren’t getting home until 5:00 PM or later each day. We are urgently seeking at least 4 more full-time drivers and additional substitute drivers to alleviate this strain. Even committing to just one or two routes per week can make a significant difference. We have several bus classes coming up soon, and the cost of training and licensing is covered by the school district. If you’re interested in helping out, please contact Dane Lancaster. Your support in this crucial role would help us ensure our students have a more timely and comfortable ride home.
Thank you to Noel Griffin for helping us and driving a few routes a week! We appreciate this so much!
Also, we want to thank parents for being patient and flexible as we have had to park a few buses in the last couple of weeks. We are working diligently to mitigate this issue as soon as possible.
