{"id":716,"date":"2025-10-03T15:11:15","date_gmt":"2025-10-03T19:11:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hendersoncountypublicschoolsnc.org\/student-services\/?page_id=716"},"modified":"2025-12-17T11:09:22","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T16:09:22","slug":"mtss","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.hendersoncountypublicschoolsnc.org\/student-services\/mtss\/","title":{"rendered":"MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpi.nc.gov\/students-families\/parents-corner\/multi-tiered-systems-support-mtss-families\">Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) for Families<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) is a multi-tiered framework that promotes school improvement through engaging, research-based academic and behavioral practices.<\/p>\n<p>A multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) consists of six critical components.<\/p>\n<h3>Leadership<\/h3>\n<p>The principal, assistant principal(s), and school leadership team:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Communicate a vision and mission to school staff.<\/li>\n<li>Provide resources for planning and implementing instruction and intervention.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure that staff have the data needed for data-based problem solving.<\/li>\n<li>Engage staff in ongoing professional development for implementing MTSS.<\/li>\n<li>Plan strategically for MTSS implementation.<\/li>\n<li>Model a problem-solving process for school improvement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Building the Capacity\/Infrastructure for Implementation<\/h3>\n<p>School-wide capacity and infrastructure include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ongoing professional development and coaching with an emphasis on data-based problem solving and multi-tiered instruction and intervention.<\/li>\n<li>Scheduling that allows staff to plan and implement targeted instruction and systems of support.<\/li>\n<li>Processes and procedures for engaging in data-based problem solving.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Communication and Collaboration<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Includes stakeholders in planning and providing continuous feedback.<\/li>\n<li>Builds the infrastructure to communicate and work with families and other community partners.<\/li>\n<li>Increases the likelihood that innovative practices will be implemented and sustained.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Data-Based Problem Solving<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Includes the use of data-based problem solving for student outcomes across content areas, grade levels, and systems of support.<\/li>\n<li>Includes the use of problem-solving to address barriers to school-wide implementation of MTSS.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While several models for data-based problem solving exist, the four-step problem-solving approach includes:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Identifying the goals and objectives to be attained,<\/li>\n<li>Identifying possible reasons why the desired goals are not being attained,<\/li>\n<li>Developing a plan for implementing evidence-based strategies to attain goals,<\/li>\n<li>Evaluating the effectiveness of the plan.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Three-Tiered Instructional\/Intervention Model<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Tier 1 includes the differentiated Core support all students receive during classroom instruction that utilizes research-based best practices for all learners.<\/li>\n<li>Tier 2 includes supplemental systems and supports that allow for targeted instruction provided to students not yet meeting benchmarks.<\/li>\n<li>Tier 3 includes intensive systems and supports that allow for targeted, intensive instruction for students showing significant barriers to learning the skills required for school success.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The three-tiered instructional\/intervention model includes both academic and social-emotional\/behavioral instruction and systems.<\/p>\n<h3>Data Evaluation<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>School staff understands and has access to data sources that address the purposes of assessment.<\/li>\n<li>Procedures and protocols for administering assessments and data use allow school staff to use student data to make educational decisions.<\/li>\n<li>Data on the fidelity of MTSS implementation allow school leadership to examine the current practices and make changes for improving MTSS implementation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you have questions about the MTSS process in your child&#8217;s school, please reach out to your child&#8217;s school principal.
