{"id":324,"date":"2011-09-14T16:30:34","date_gmt":"2011-09-14T20:30:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hendersoncountypublicschoolsnc.org\/student-services\/?page_id=324"},"modified":"2024-02-13T13:49:39","modified_gmt":"2024-02-13T18:49:39","slug":"truancy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.hendersoncountypublicschoolsnc.org\/student-services\/truancy\/","title":{"rendered":"Truancy, Attendance, and Student Engagement"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Contact Information:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Kelly McNair Beaver<\/strong>,\u00a0<em>Student Intervention Specialist,\u00a0<\/em>(828) 696-6008<\/p>\n<p>Please contact Kelly Beaver with any issues related to absenteeism, school refusal, truancy or student engagement.\u00a0 Closely linked to school administrators, school social workers, school counselors, and other staff, she also works closely with our community partners, such as Juvenile Justice, The Mediation Center, and The Department of Social Services.\u00a0 These agencies and other community support partners serve as resources when students and families need to return to school and remain engaged.\u00a0 While there are many strategies designed to improve attendance, HCPS often makes referrals for student truancy to the Department of Social Services and The Department of Juvenile Justice.\u00a0 North Carolina compulsory attendance law requires that court referrals occur only with the express permission and approval of the school principal or designee.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The North Carolina Compulsory Attendance Law<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>North Carolina Compulsory Attendance Law (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncleg.net\/enactedlegislation\/statutes\/html\/bysection\/chapter_115c\/gs_115c-378.html\">click here to see G.S. 115C-378: NC Compulsory Attendance<\/a>) requires all children between the ages of seven and sixteen to attend school.\u00a0 Truancy, or excessive unexcused absences from school, can result in criminal action involving parents\/caregivers or referrals to the juvenile justice system for students.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Kelly Beaver works with students and families to develop attendance success plans which address academic and behavioral engagement.\u00a0 Strategies for improving attendance are developed between the family and student support team.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The HCPS Attendance Policy<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Henderson County Public Schools has also adopted a policy (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.boardpolicyonline.com\/bl\/?b=henderson_county#&amp;&amp;hs=523324\">click here to see Policy Manual HCPA;
