Supporting Students Experiencing Homelessness<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Any staff member may notice signs of homelessness. School administrators, teachers, school nurses, bus drivers, child nutrition staff, front office personnel, and coaches all play a vital role in helping connect students with resources and support.<\/p>\n

Potential Indicators of Homelessness<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    Chronic absenteeism or tardiness<\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  • \n
    Frequent school changes or attendance at numerous schools in a short period of time<\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  • Transportation challenges (e.g., missing the bus or difficulty getting to school)<\/li>\n
  • \n
    Social and behavioral challenges<\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  • \n
    Hygiene and nutrition needs<\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  • Missing enrollment documentation<\/li>\n
  • \n
    Unmet medical and dental needs<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Tips for Staff<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    • Be aware\u2014know the possible indicators of homelessness.<\/li>\n
    • Ensure full participation\u2014students experiencing homelessness should have the same opportunities as all students, including participation in special projects, after-school sports, and educational activities.<\/li>\n
    • Maintain sensitivity and confidentiality\u2014understand the stigma associated with homelessness.<\/li>\n
    • Reach out for support\u2014if you suspect a student may be experiencing homelessness, contact your school counselor or school social workers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Each school’s social worker serves as the main contact for staff referrals to the McKinney-Vento Program. However, any staff member may also make a direct referral by contacting Ms. Ownbey at 828.388.0294.<\/p>\n
