{"id":31,"date":"2011-02-02T20:03:11","date_gmt":"2011-02-02T20:03:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hendersoncountypublicschoolsnc.org\/hes\/"},"modified":"2024-03-08T09:48:41","modified_gmt":"2024-03-08T14:48:41","slug":"nurse-guide","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.hendersoncountypublicschoolsnc.org\/hes\/nurse-guide\/","title":{"rendered":"Nurse Guide"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Sick Child Guidelines<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hendersoncountypublicschoolsnc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Guidelines-For-Keeping-Your-Child-Home-From-School.pdf\">HCPS Guidelines for Keeping Your Child Home from School<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>We all agree that healthy children learn better. Please keep your child home if s\/he is sick to help<br \/>\nprevent the spread of illness at school. Please do not medicate a sick child, especially with a fever,<br \/>\nand send them to school.<\/p>\n<p><em>If your child has any of the following, they should remain home for at least 24 hours after<\/em><br \/>\n<em>symptoms reside:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <strong>Fever<\/strong>: temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. Remember that a child must be<br \/>\nfever free (without the use of fever-reducing medication) for 24 hours before returning to<br \/>\nschool.<br \/>\n\u2022 <strong>Eyes<\/strong>: with thick mucus or pus draining from the eye or pink eye. With pink eye you may see a<br \/>\nwhite or yellow discharge, matted eyelids after sleep, eye pain and\/or redness. Your child<br \/>\nmust receive 24 hours of antibiotics and\/or doctor approval before returning to school.<br \/>\n\u2022 <strong>Sore Throat with Fever or Swollen Glands in Neck<\/strong>: your child may return to school after 24<br \/>\nhours of antibiotic with strep throat.<br \/>\n\u2022 <strong>Vomiting<\/strong>: two (2) or more times within the past 24 hours.<br \/>\n\u2022 <strong>Diarrhea<\/strong>: three (3) or more watery stools in a 24-hour period, especially if the child acts or<br \/>\nlooks ill.<br \/>\n\u2022 <strong>Earache with Fever<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 <strong>Rash with Fever<\/strong>: heat rashes and allergic reactions are not contagious.<br \/>\n\u2022 <strong>Chicken Pox<\/strong>: Children must stay at home for five (5) days after the onset of blisters, or until<br \/>\nall pox are scabbed over and dry.<br \/>\n\u2022 <strong>Viral Cold<\/strong>: the first few days when your child is most uncomfortable.<br \/>\n\u2022<strong> Persistent Cough<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 <strong>Untreated Head or Body Lice\/Scabies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If your child shows any of the above symptoms at school, it will be necessary to pick him\/her up from<br \/>\nschool. Please keep all contact phone numbers and emergency information current with your<br \/>\nchild\u2019s teacher and with the office.<\/p>\n<p><em>While they should be monitored, the following symptoms do not exclude a child from school<\/em>:<br \/>\n\u2022 Sniffles, a runny nose and\/or a mild cough without a fever<br \/>\n\u2022 Vague complains of aches, pains, or fatigue<br \/>\n\u2022 Single episode of diarrhea or vomiting without any other symptoms<br \/>\n\u2022 Ear infection without fever: your child does not need to be excluded but does need medical<br \/>\ntreatment.
