Marlow Monday Message, October 23rd, 2017

Henderson County Public Schools News

Good evening Glenn Marlow parents and students, this is John Hart with your Marlow Monday message on this Monday, October 23rd2017.  This week, in our “Marlow Moments of the Week”, we want to highlight:

-Last Tuesday, our students listened to informative session on Fire Prevention, sponsored by the Mills River Fire Department, during their Specials time.  An appearance from Sparky the Fire Dog highlighted the session, as well as students getting a closer look at fire truck.  Special thanks goes to the Mills River Fire Dept for coming out and educating our students on fire safety.

– On Thursday, our 5th graders adventured down to Camp Arrowhead for Outdoor Education.  Highlighted by students learning about archery, rock climbing, fire building, and a blindfold hike, it was a great day for our 5th graders!!!

Now, here is this week’s news and announcements:

-This week is Pumpkin Lighting Week at Marlow.  We look forward to seeing everyone on Thursday evening from 5pm -8pm for great food, games, raffle baskets, hay rides, a cake walk, and our amazing pumpkin displays our students have been working on all week.  Raffle Baskets are on display in the front office this week, and tickets are on sale now through Thursday night.   A list of the baskets was sent home with students last week.  It is also attached to this email.  Please return raffle ticket sales to your teacher.

A few other reminders for Pumpkin Lighting on Thursday – the time for the event is 5pm – 8pm on Thursday night.  Please check out the Marlow PTO Facebook page to find out more details about this awesome night!   Students, please remember that we do encourage you to wear your costumes on Thursday night, but no masks are allowed.   Parents – We are still in need of volunteers to help with some of the events, so please, if you are able to help, click on the link, or contact Kjersten Smith for more information.

At the same time, on Tuesday and Wednesday, our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders will be taking the 1st Quarter Benchmark and NC Check-In test.  In an effort to provide our students the best testing environment possible, we are asking all parents to not come into the building to prepare for Pumpkin Lighting until 10:30, when all tests are complete.  Again, this will allow our students to do their best on these assessments without distraction.  Thank you for your consideration this week.

In other news, the student response to interest in the Marlow STEM Club has been tremendous.  Over 150 students signed up for the upcoming STEM Clubs – so much that we doubled the number of sessions STEM is meeting to get in as many kids as possible.  Those students selected to be apart of STEM Club 1 and STEM Club 2 will receive letter notifications by the end of this week.  For those not selected, we want to encourage you to participate in our STEM Night, set for February 8th, and sign up again next year for STEM Club.

-Just a reminder that this Friday, October 27th, is now a school day for students.  This Friday also marks the end of the 1st Quarter for 2017-2018 school year.

– A few dates to remember are:

– Monday, October 30th is Marlow Pink Out Day.  Students and staff are encouraged to wear pink that day to show increased awareness of breast cancer and breast cancer awareness month.  We hope you all join us as ONE school that day.

– Nov. 4 – Fall Make-up Picture Day for those who were absent on the first Picture Day, new students, or students who would just like another picture taken.  Please see your teacher for order forms.

As we look to Tuesday, please be mindful of any roads that may be closed due to flooding from the rains today, and know that it may result in late buses and car riders being late in the morning.

Thank you for all you do.   Have a great week.    #WeAreMarlow
