When Vernon and Leander Johnson bequeathed their farm to the Henderson County Schools in 1987, it was their vision that the farm be used as a heritage education center for area school children. Today, the farm is owned by HCPS and managed by Historic Johnson Farm Foundation Inc., a non-profit organization with a 501(c)(3) designation from the Internal Revenue Service. Qualified donations to the foundation are tax-deductible. The farm also has accounts with the Community Foundation of Henderson County. Donations to this foundation are tax-deductible as well.

WAYS TO SUPPORT HISTORIC JOHNSON FARM

Did you know? Henderson County Public Schools owns the land and buildings that make up Historic Johnson Farm. HCPS pays for the director’s salary and routine maintenance. Everything else is paid for through donations, festivals, tours, and programs!

WINDOW RESTORATION PROJECT

The brick house at the farm is 142 years old, and work is necessary on the windows. The glass itself is original, and over time, panes have cracked. The window frames have peeling paint and will need to be scraped, primed, and painted. A few of the window sashes appear to have been chewed by a rodent and will need to be repaired with wood. Several of the sash cords for the windows have broken and need replacing as well. Another portion of needed restoration is replacing the old, outdated UV panels in the windows that are no longer serving their purpose. Low E glass storm windows are needed to provide the UV protection to protect the precious artifacts inside the house. Once all of this repair work is done, the windows will be in good shape for decades to come. More importantly, the actual farmhouse as well as the important artifacts inside the house will be protected.

Logan Restoration out of Asheville will be completing the restorative work. The farm has been awarded a grant of $25,000 by the Community Foundation of Henderson County and a grant of $10,000 by the Marion Stedman Covington Foundation which will cover half of the project. Donations to the Window Restoration Project will go directly to support the work.

JOHNSON FARM FARM FUND

General donations can be given to this account to help the farm maintain its day-to-day operations. Money given here could be used for anything from programming costs to landscaping to restoration projects. The Farm Fund pays for the day-to-day operations of the farm. This includes office supplies, program expenses, and repairs beyond what the
school system can help with. This fund also helps keep camps and field trips affordable.

JOHNSON FARM ANIMAL FUND

This fund is similar to the endowment fund, but funds donated to this are currently being used for animal care until the Endowment Fund has reached a point where income from the Endowment can be used for animal care. Gifts to the Johnson Farm Animal Sponsors may be mailed to 3346 Haywood Road, Hendersonville, NC 28791. Donations are tax deductible.

The Animal Fund pays for all of the expenses for our donkeys, Lester and April, and goats, Oliver and Riley. The goats arrived in November and are still growing. Visitors, especially children, love seeing and petting the animals when they are at the farm. As with most years, this year the Animal Fund aided in:

-While the animals have pastures to graze in, a healthy diet consists of hay and feed each morning and evening. Our animals love to eat!
-Routine veterinary care provides check-ups and necessary vaccinations to keep the animals healthy.

THE JOHNSON FARM ENDOWMENT FUND

To honor the memory of the Johnson brothers, and to ensure this farm will forever remain a community treasure, the farm has established the Johnson Farm Endowment Fund. Our generous community needs to guarantee that this unique education center of today remains for the generations of tomorrow. The fund was started with gifts in memory of a beloved educator and from funds raised during our annual fundraisers. JOHNSON FARM ANIMAL ENDOWMENT FUND

The Johnson Farm Animal Endowment Fund was established by an anonymous donor to create a fund that could be used for the acquisition, care and housing of farm animals at Johnson Farm. Currently the farm has a pair of donkeys and four chickens. Gifts to the Johnson Farm Animal Endowment Fund may be mailed to the Community Foundation of Henderson County at 401 N.
