HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (Aug. 21, 2018) – Staff and board members representing Henderson County Public Schools will join Henderson County Commissioners in turning the dirt at the new Edneyville Elementary project site Thursday, Aug. 30, at 10 a.m., marking a new era for Yellowjacket students and staff.

Construction on the new building – set behind the existing Edneyville Elementary facility off Pace Road – began in June 2018, and is set for completion by the start of school in August 2019. The new two-story facility will feature an abundance of natural lighting, and K-5 classrooms on the building’s western side that look out over a pond and the scenic rural landscape.

The school’s media center, cafeteria, and administrative offices will be on the eastern side of the building. Outside, a new playground and outdoor learning spaces will be constructed for students. Also included in site plans is a full-size gymnasium that will be co-managed by the Henderson County Parks & Recreation Department, creating a multi-use space open to the Edneyville community.

Henderson County Commission Chairman Mike Edney said, “This is a great day for the students and teachers of Edneyville Elementary, but also, for the community as a whole. This facility was designed to enhance the educational opportunities for the students, but also enriches the strong sense of community spirit that runs through Edneyville.”

The 87,000-square-foot facility designed by Clark Nexsen of Asheville is being constructed by Beverly Grant Barnhill, and has a total projected cost of $24,996,228.

“This project is more than just replacing a 48-year-old school building,” said Bo Caldwell, HCPS superintendent. “With a core capacity of 600 students, and collaborative, state-of-the-art learning environments, the new Edneyville Elementary will serve as a model for safe, innovative schools for years to come.”
